Durian Musang King (Durio zibethinus ‘Musang King’)
Musang King, also known as “Mao Shan Wang” in Chinese, is the most famous and sought-after durian variety in Malaysia—and arguably the world. Revered for its unbeatable combination of bold flavor, smooth texture, and high flesh-to-seed ratio, it is the gold standard for durians.
The fruit is typically medium to large in size with a slightly oval or oblong shape and distinct greenish-yellow, thorny skin. A unique star-shaped pattern often marks the base of the fruit. What sets Musang King apart is its vibrant golden-yellow flesh, which is thick, creamy, and buttery, with a taste profile that combines deep sweetness with a lingering, slightly bitter undertone. This contrast gives the durian a sophisticated flavor that durian aficionados adore.
Musang King trees thrive in the tropical highlands of Malaysia, particularly in Pahang and Johor, and are harvested once or twice a year depending on the climate. The variety is known for its relatively long shelf life and transport-friendly quality, making it popular for export.
This durian is often consumed fresh, but it’s also a favorite in high-end durian desserts, including mooncakes, pastries, ice cream, and gourmet creations.
