Sabara Jaboticaba (Plinia jaboticaba)
Sabara Jaboticaba is the most well-known and widely cultivated variety of jaboticaba in Brazil. It’s a small to medium-sized tree admired for its beautiful appearance and unique fruiting style—bearing glossy, dark purple to almost black fruits directly on its trunk and branches (a botanical phenomenon known as cauliflory).
The fruits of the Sabara are small (about the size of a grape) with thin skin and translucent white pulp. Their flavor is a perfect blend of sweet and tart, often compared to muscadine grapes with a hint of floral citrus. They’re excellent when eaten fresh and are also used to make jellies, wines, juices, and desserts.
Sabara Jaboticaba trees are slow-growing and long-lived. They typically begin fruiting in 6–8 years from seed, although grafted plants may fruit much sooner. The tree thrives in warm, humid climates and prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil. With proper care, it can produce multiple crops throughout the year.
Due to its compact growth habit and beautiful bark, Sabara is also a favorite for ornamental planting and container gardening.
