Black Sapote (Diospyros digyna) – Also Known as Chocolate Pudding Fruit
The Black Sapote is a tropical fruit tree native to Mexico and Central America, famous for producing unique fruits often referred to as “chocolate pudding fruit.” When ripe, the fruit’s skin turns olive to deep green, while the soft, custard-like flesh inside becomes rich brown to black in color. Its flavor is mild, sweet, and reminiscent of chocolate mousse or pudding, making it a popular natural dessert.
This evergreen tree can reach medium to large size and prefers warm, frost-free climates. It bears glossy green leaves and small white flowers that develop into round or oval fruits. The Black Sapote is rich in vitamin C, low in fat, and loved for its use in smoothies, desserts, baked goods, or simply eaten fresh with a spoon.
It is a hardy, productive tree, suitable for tropical and subtropical gardens. With proper care, it can yield heavy crops seasonally and grow well in large containers or open ground.
