Lamb Hass Avocado (Persea americana – ‘Lamb Hass’)

The Lamb Hass avocado is a premium cultivar of the Persea americana species, developed in California in the 1980s. It is a hybrid between the popular Hass avocado and the Gwen variety. This cultivar has quickly gained popularity among growers for its excellent fruit quality, high yield, and smaller, more manageable tree size compared to traditional Hass trees.

Lamb Hass avocados produce medium to large, oval-shaped fruits with thick, pebbly, dark green skin that turns blackish-purple when fully ripe. The skin is slightly thicker than the classic Hass, providing good protection during handling and shipping. The creamy, pale green flesh inside has a rich, nutty flavor that closely resembles the Hass avocado but with a slightly firmer texture, making it ideal for slicing and dicing.

One of the major advantages of Lamb Hass trees is their compact growth habit, making them suitable for smaller gardens and high-density plantings. These trees are highly productive and tend to yield heavy crops later in the season, with fruits typically maturing between late spring and summer—often after Hass avocados are harvested, extending the avocado season.

Lamb Hass avocado trees thrive in warm, sunny climates with well-drained soils and benefit from regular watering and fertilization. They are considered moderately frost-tolerant but perform best in USDA zones 9 to 11. The variety is also appreciated for its drought tolerance once established.
