Kak Jam Fruit (Syzygium cumini / Java Plum / Jamun)
Kak Jam, commonly known as Java Plum or Jamun, is a tropical fruit prized for its deep purple color and rich, tangy flavor. Native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, this fruit grows on a tall, evergreen tree that is admired both for its beauty and its delicious fruit.
The fruit is oval or oblong in shape, turning deep purple to almost black when ripe. Its flesh is soft, juicy, and has a unique sweet-tart taste with a hint of astringency, often leaving a slight purple stain on the tongue. Kak Jam is widely enjoyed fresh but is also used in traditional recipes such as juices, wines, jellies, and desserts.
In addition to its culinary uses, Kak Jam is highly valued for its medicinal properties. It is rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, and iron, and is traditionally used to support digestion and help regulate blood sugar levels.
The tree itself is hardy and adaptable, thriving in tropical and subtropical climates. It’s also drought-tolerant once established and grows well in full sun. With its dense canopy and ornamental appearance, it serves as both a fruit tree and a shade tree in gardens and landscapes.
