Chammaliang (Lepisanthes fruticosa)
Chammaliang is a tropical fruit-bearing tree known for its beautiful clusters of colorful fruits and lush foliage. Native to Southeast Asia, this unique tree produces small, round fruits that grow in hanging clusters. The fruits change color as they ripen—from green to yellow, then red, and finally to deep purple or black.
When fully ripe, the fruits have a sweet and slightly tangy flavor, enjoyed fresh or sometimes used in local snacks and recipes. The seeds can also be roasted and eaten in some cultures. Apart from its edible fruits, Chammaliang is valued as an ornamental plant because of its glossy leaves and vibrant fruit clusters.
The tree grows well in warm climates and prefers sunny or partially shaded locations with well-drained soil. It’s often grown in home gardens for its beauty and fruit. Besides its culinary uses, Chammaliang is known in traditional medicine for its soothing properties.
