Cambucá (Plinia edulis)

Cambucá is a rare and highly prized tropical fruit native to the Atlantic rainforest of Brazil. It belongs to the Myrtaceae family and is closely related to jaboticaba. Its name, Cambucá, comes from the indigenous Tupi language, meaning “jar-shaped,” referring to the round, pot-like appearance of its fruit.

The fruit is typically bright yellow to golden-orange when ripe, with a smooth, thin skin. It has a round to slightly flattened shape and grows directly from the trunk and branches, a unique characteristic known as cauliflory. Inside, the soft, juicy pulp is translucent to pale orange, with a sweet, tangy flavor often compared to a mix of apricot, tangerine, and mango, with a refreshing, citrus-like aftertaste. Each fruit contains several seeds within its tender flesh.

Cambucá is typically eaten fresh, scooping out the pulp with a spoon, but it can also be used in juices, jams, jellies, and desserts. Its rich taste and exotic appeal make it a favorite among fruit collectors and tropical fruit enthusiasts.

The tree itself is medium-sized, usually growing between 4 to 10 meters tall, with lush, dark green foliage. It prefers warm, humid climates and thrives in well-drained, rich soils. Cambucá trees are slow-growing but highly ornamental, often grown in home gardens and fruit collections for their striking beauty and delicious fruit.

Besides its culinary appeal, Cambucá is a good source of vitamin C, antioxidants, and other beneficial nutrients.
