Pitomba (Talisia esculenta)
Pitomba, also known as Olho-de-boi or Pitomba-do-mato, is a tropical fruit native to South America, particularly Brazil. It grows on a medium-sized, attractive tree that can reach heights of 8 to 15 meters, making it popular not only for its fruit but also as a shade tree in tropical gardens.
The fruit of the Pitomba tree is small and round, typically growing in clusters. When ripe, the skin turns yellowish-orange and is thin but slightly leathery. Inside, the fruit contains a soft, juicy, translucent pulp that surrounds one or two large seeds. The flavor is sweet with a pleasantly tangy, slightly acidic kick, often compared to a mix of lychee and citrus, making it a refreshing snack.
Pitomba fruits are often enjoyed fresh, straight from the tree, but they can also be used to make juices, jellies, liqueurs, and syrups. Besides its delightful taste, the fruit is also rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and essential minerals.
