Russell Avocado (Persea americana – ‘Russell’)
The Russell avocado is a unique and distinctive avocado variety, best known for its exceptionally long, slender shape—often called the “Florida Slimcado.” This cultivar is popular in Florida and other tropical regions, prized for its impressive size and attractive appearance.
Russell avocados can grow quite large, often weighing between 1 to 2 pounds (450 to 900 grams), with some fruits reaching up to 16 inches in length. The fruit has smooth, glossy, thin green skin that remains green even when ripe. Inside, the flesh is pale green to yellow, creamy, and mildly sweet with a lower oil content compared to Hass, resulting in a lighter, more refreshing taste. The seed inside is relatively small, allowing for more usable flesh.
The Russell avocado tree is a vigorous grower that thrives in warm, tropical to subtropical climates with full sun and well-draining soil. It prefers humid environments and is well-suited for regions like South Florida and the Caribbean. This variety typically produces fruit from mid-summer to early fall, making it a great option for off-season harvests in areas where avocados are typically harvested earlier in the year.
Because of its unique appearance and lighter flavor, Russell avocados are excellent for fresh eating, slicing into salads, or using in sandwiches. While they may not have the high oil content of Hass, they offer a refreshing alternative, especially for those who prefer a lighter avocado taste.
Nutritionally, Russell avocados are packed with essential vitamins such as C, E, K, and B-complex, along with dietary fiber, potassium, and healthy fats—though with slightly less fat than traditional Hass avocados, making them a good option for lighter diets.
